Glenn has an incredible story. He has gone from homeless to whole and in this episode, he tells us all about that journey. His perspective on life is inspiring to me and I believe it will be to you as well so listen and enjoy!

The worst part of homelessness isn’t what you might think
People think the worst part of homelessness is not having something, be it a car, house, job, or whatever. Glenn says the worst part of homelessness is that you literally become invisible. People will not make eye contact with you. They look above you, or around you. Maybe they don't want to make eye contact because they think you're going to mug them. Maybe they don't want to make eye contact because they think you're going to ask them for money, and they're going to feel guilty for telling you no. Whatever it is, I think everyone that's listening to this right now can think of a time where they averted making eye contact with somebody homeless. When people don’t see you then you just start to blend in. You become like a park bench or a bush and you just start to blend in. Then what ends up happening is homelessness becomes hopelessness and that is the worst part of being homeless.
Leaning into the uncomfortable areas of life
You should hear the whole story—and you can when you listen to the episode— but there was a brief glimpse, just moments before Glenn’s grandfather passed away, that he was filled with life. Glenn realized two things in this experience. First, that we are 100% spiritual beings. The second thing is that we are most comfortable in life just before death. Both realizations transformed Glenn’s life.
Glenn says he has looked at comfort before death in every aspect of his life since because he sees that pattern everywhere. You get comfortable in your marriage or at work, guess what happens? It's almost at the end. You get comfortable as a professional athlete. You think you're the bomb. You've finally made it, you get comfortable, and don't keep putting in the work...somebody is going to come and take your spot.
Anytime Glenn personally starts to settle in or feel a little comfortable, he’s like...wait a minute! I'm not ready to die yet! There are more lives to impact, people to meet, places to travel. So he constantly pushes himself to stay uncomfortable, and he challenges other people to do the same!
Preparing children, not for the world but for God to use in the world
When I asked Glenn how he prepares his children for the world we live in, for the world they will encounter his answer pointed heavily to communication and faith-based guidance. Glenn says there has to be education. We’ve got to talk to our kids about the things that his parents wouldn't talk to him about. They wouldn't talk to him about money because it was none of his business. They didn’t want to talk about sex. They didn't want to talk to him about anything. So he thinks that it's important to communicate and educate.
However, Glenn says the biggest thing that he does for his kids is believe that each of them was born of divine nature. He believes that they are children of God and that God is more powerful and knows better about what's best for Glenn’s kids than Glenn or anyone else possibly could. Glenn says his plans for his kids don't count, they don't matter. So instead of being the type of father who is trying to direct, he guides his children with guard rails but he doesn’t intend to direct them in any way, shape, or form. Instead, Glenn observes and looks for the seeds that are already in them, the gifts, the things that make them special and unique. Glenn says he’s found in his life that when you find your sweet spot, life is incredible! It’s when you're trying to be a chameleon and you're trying to be something you're not that life gets tragic.
