Where did the idea for Smart Plate begin and what it is exactly?

A few years ago Anthony ALMOST lost his dad to the #1 killer in the world. Heart Disease. This is caused by the #1 problem in healthcare which is what we are eating. As Anthony sat in the lobby praying for his dad to make it through a very risky surgery, he had a book in his hand. When he was done praying he opened the book and what he read was that no one ever has to die from heart disease or stroke and that it is a man-made disease. This led Anthony down a thought process (that you should listen to in the show) that ultimately led to Smart Plate.

Smart Plate is food technology that combines artificial intelligence with elegant hardware, and it is the first of it’s kind. It is accurate, easy, and fast. In less than five seconds, you can weigh and identify your foods with the highest degree of accuracy. You put your food— protein, carbs, and fats— in the three different sections, in any arrangement that you want. Then you take one picture from the top and in less than five seconds, you have all the micros and macros of what you are about to eat. That includes everything… your carbs, proteins, fats, your vitamins and minerals, sodium fiber, and sugar. We had this realization that if people had this nutritional awareness and they understood their portions we could fix things at the core.

Taking people on a health journey from home to anywhere they may go

When you are eating at home you have your Smart Plate right there on the counter next to your NutriBullet. You weigh everything with precision. What about when you go out? We don’t always eat at home. We are out for lunch, or dinner at a friend’s, we bring food to the workplace, and you don’t pack your NutriBullet with you when you go. So Anthony has come up with a way to keep your journey going wherever you are!

Taking photos of your food is a trend that has gained popularity and probably won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. So it makes perfect sense to have built that into the Smart Plate infrastructure. People don’t think twice when seeing someone snap a food pic, so doing it at a restaurant, or at work, or at a party to count your macros is like having a secret weapon fighting for your health without ever drawing attention to yourself!

Artificial intelligence and nutrition together?

Anthony says “Artificial intelligence is a pretty broad term. You have robotics, machine vision, computer vision, machine learning, and then on the subset of machine learning is deep learning. We focus on machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision because we use face recognition technology, which is similar to what is used on our phones already and we apply it to food. Then we feed it a ton of data.

When we use AI, not only does it identify foods, but it takes away the job of the individual having to identify and punch it in manually. It immediately recognizes what you're eating within seconds.” Anthony thinks it can be taken further by looking at all of those things from a coaching perspective, we're looking to increase a coach's client base through AI, because we can automate a lot of the rigorous work that they do, planning meal plans, answering the same questions over and over again for their clients. It will help clients and coaches.
